The most influential aspects of computers which have the greatest impact on society is the ability to make communications, anywhere in the world, practically instantaneous, and free. With email programs and other technologies like Skype, there is no reason not to be in constant touch with anyone, any place in the world, and at any time, for just about no money. The other amazing benefit to society which the computer has delivered is allowing instant and comprehensive access to information, which is a truly mind-blowing achievement.

Sir Frances Bacon first said that “Knowledge is power.” Almost universal access to computers and their ability to provide information has given the ordinary citizen amazing power in many areas of life. As an example we can see how information has changed the way we shop. Let’s say you want to purchase a new dishwasher. It wasn’t that long ago that the consumer would mosey on down to Sears or a neighborhood appliance store and buy the nicest dishwasher he could find in his price range. Only the most dedicated and pennywise shopper would spend hours or days searching for the best value for his money. Today, with just a few clicks of the mouse, and in no time at all, it is possible to compare features and prices until you find the dishwasher, (or anything else that it might be) that perfectly suits you for the best possible price.

The power of information does not end with the power consumers now have. We can learn about people, books, history, finance, travel, just about anything that a person wants or needs to know about are easily accessible and immediately delivered. Computers have revolutionized how we live, what we do, and what we know and when we know it. Any questions? Just send me an e-mail.
